HISTORY OF THE MLD INSTITUTE IN THE U.S.In the mid 1980’s a physician turned lymphatic mayhem into a success story by introducing a European therapy (MLD) that was the answer to the enigma of the lymphatic system. His name is Dr. Robert Lerner, affectionately known as “The Pioneer of Lymphedema Therapy.” Dr. Lerner’s near miraculous before and after photos seen on ABC World News Tonight spoke volumes to the medical community. Until that time we had no effective surgical or drug interventions to treat the 2% of the population living with Lymphedema. Manual Lymph Drainage, better known as MLD, is a gentle technique developed by Dr. Vodder in Europe and employed in European spas and clinics of lymphology for both its cosmetic and health benefits. Dr. Vodder’s MLD was utilized as a conservative approach for many conditions now memorialized in, “The Compendium of Dr. Vodder’s Manual Lymph Drainage,” by Renato Kasseroller. For the past two decades, MLD has primarily served a Lymphedema population. Still, others (physicians, spas, insurance companies, universities, professional organizations and even publishers desire to embrace more knowledge of MLD and its benefits for the general public that Is now demanding it. Until recent years it was difficult to locate a MLD certification course that addressed MLD outside of a Lymphedema population where America had kept its educational focus. Elisa DiFalco, a Lymphedema Specialist and educator at Dr. Lerner’s clinic recognized and responded to her colleagues requests for topic specific courses with a practical focus. The first course was so successful that it caught the attention of everyone from insurance companies to the finest spas in the United States. After a decade of practice, research and refinement, the MLD Institute is pleased to present her course collection that is meeting the marketplace need for MLD around the world. “Release the Fountain of Youth Within, comes from an understanding that the lymphatic systems role in immunity is like a fountain which supports all the other systems that derive wellness from it,” says Professor DiFalco. Professionals around the country agree and regularly contact the Institute for specialized studies that address what other certification courses do not. This is why the Institute offers Holistic MLD Certification for all the population that does not have Lymphedema yet has a lymphatic system that can benefit from MLD.
